In April 2019, one
of the most famous cathedrals in the world was
partially destroyed by fire. Notre-Dame de Paris sustained heavy damage in the disaster.
Donations poured in from around the world to rebuild the
cathedral, including from some of France’s wealthiest citizens.
President Emmanuel
Macron vowed that Notre-Dame would be rebuilt within five years using the
nearly $900 million collected. But the deadline won’t quite be met, but the
restorations is now in the homestretch.
Hundreds of artisans work towards a reopening on December 8, 2024.
If all goes according to plan, the framework for the
famed spire will be completed this year, allowing a return to the Paris
skyline of one of the its oldest and most iconic features.
The project has
been complicated by involvement of so many different actors, like the
government, the national auditor to oversee the vast
sums involved, the doners, the architects, and contractors and workers.
While Notre-Dame
won’t be reopened in time for the Summer Olympics next year, those heading the
project say they are finally confident the public and worshipers
will be able to go inside by the end of next year.
