2. Machine or human error? 機械のせいか人のせいか

The second event which definitely entertained me was at Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal. Mr. Bus ticket vending machine!! I was there to get on a bus to Louvre museum. 

I could just catch a taxi but I rather chose to hop on a bus so that I could take a glance of local life. Indeed, looking at people and shops from the bus and talking to a local woman on the bus was fun.

I was able to save a lot of money even though it takes some extra travelling time.

And the vibe at the bus terminal where tourists wouldn’t usually visit gave me an opportunity to take a glance at local life. I loved being there, watching people and talking to them.

私を楽しませてくれた2つ目の出来事は、アブダビのバスターミナルでのこと。バスチケットの自動券売機さん。ルーブル美術館に行くバスに乗るためにバスターミナルに来ていました。タクシーを捕まえることもできましたが、現地の生活を垣間見るチャンスだと思いあえてローカルバスを選びました。実際に車窓からお店や人を見るのは楽しかったし、隣に座った人と話もできて楽しかったです。時間はかかりますが、節約にもなりました。

そして何よりもバスターミナル自体が観光客何て来ないような場所らしく、雰囲気がThe Local！現地の人たちの日常を見ることができる面白い場所でした。

Anyways, I had to buy an IC card like Suica to get around by bus. I was hoping to get it around the mosque which I visited first in the morning but there was no ticketing machine so I was at the terminal. 

First I had to figure out which machine sells the cards since some of them was only for recharging and I had no idea which one was the right one. I just asked local people what to do. The locals were always helpful, and friendly to a Japanese lady who looked being lost.

それはそうと、市内のバス移動にはICカードが必要でした。Suicaみたいなやつです。朝行ったモスクの近くで買えればよかったのですが券売機が見つからずバスターミナルまで来ていました。

まず券売機を探すことからスタート。というのも、チャージ専用の機械もあって私にはどれがどれだかよくわからないので。とにかくどうすればいいのかその辺にいる人に聞きまくったのですが、みんなとってもフレンドリー。迷子の日本人にとても親切にしてくれましたよ。

The first guy who I talked to directed me to one of the machines at the end of the terminal. One day ticket costs 10 AED which is about 400 yen and I was going to pay by credit card as I decided not to carry any cash. The vending machine was user-friendly but here comes the first problem. It wouldn't accept my credit card. I tried again but it doesn't work. 

私が最初に話しかけたおじさん（だったかな？）はターミナルの一番終わりにある販売機の1つへ行くように教えてくれました。1日券は10ディラハム、約400円。現金は使わないと決めてたのでクレジットカード決済で購入するつもりでした。販売機は操作しやすかったのですが、ここで最初の問題が。カードが拒否されて出てきてしまう。もう一度やり直してもダメ。

The service staff nearby came to me and said

近くにいたバス会社のおじさんが近づいてきて、

"It's broken. Use your cash."

壊れてるんだ。現金使って。

"I don't have any cash. "

私：現金持ってないの

"You go to ATM. It's broken. You can't use credit card."

おじさん：ATM行って。故障してるからカードは使えない

"Sure? How about other vending machines?"

私：そうなの？他の機械は？

"They are broken."

おじさん：みんな壊れてる

"Where is ATM?"

私：ATMどこ？

"Over there. You see it?"

おじさん：あっち。見えるか？

"All right, thanks."

私：わかった。ありがと。

I gave up and walked to the ATM which located across the terminal building.

Since I didn't want to carry much cash, I tried to withdraw only 20AED but it shows a message in Arabic and doesn't work. I tried a few times but there is something wrong. I thought maybe my credit card has some problem. Then this guy came to me from behind saying

"You can't take 20. It has to be at least 100."

諦めてターミナルの反対側にあるATMまで歩きました。現金なるべく持ちたくなかったので20ディラハムだけ引き出そうとしましたが、アラビア語でなんかのメッセージが表示されるも理解できず。何度かやってもダメ。すると後ろから知らない人が来て、「20なんて出せないぞ。最低でも100だ」

Oh well, too bad. That's the only way. I got 100 AED out and walked all the way back to the vending machine. I hit the button to buy one-day ticket and inserted the note then what happens? No way! The message appeared saying "No change available". Great. I should have known this was coming as this is not Japan.

ダメならしょうがないか。100ディラハム出して券売機に戻る。1日券のボタンを押す。100ディラハムを投入。で、どうなったかというとまさかの「おつりが不足しています」と。あー、ここは日本じゃないんだからこの展開予測できたはず。

"Where can I break the note?"

どこでお金崩したらいい？

"You go to the news agency and ask."

ニュースエージェンシー（海外では日本のコンビニ的位置づけ）行って聞いてみな

I went to one of the news agencies and picked a bottled water so that I could get some change but they guy at the counter goes...

そこでニュースエージェンシーでペットボトルの水を買って小銭をゲットする作戦。が、レジのお兄さんは、

"We don't have any change."

おつりがない

Great! Yeah right if you think about it, it is totally understandable. Coz this is not Japan.

Am I gonna be stuck at the bus terminal? How do I buy the ticket?

なるほど。よく考えてみれば十分あり得る話。だってここ日本じゃないし。

じゃあ行けないの？ルーブル？

I went back to the service staff and asked,

最初に話したスタッフのところに戻って

"Hey they don't have change, what do I do?"

ねえ、お釣り無いって言われたよ。どうしたらいい？

"Go to the counter."

カウンターに行きな

I was avoiding the counter where bus company stuffs were dealing with many customers in line but looked like that was the only way to get the ticket.

It was easy to get the ticket at the counter but now, they don't have enough cash either...

人がたくさん並んでいるカウンターはなるべく避けていたんだけど、チケット買うにはそれしか方法が無さそうでした。

カウンターへ行ったらチケット買うのは簡単だったのですが、ここでもやっぱりお釣りが足りない！

Fortunately, the guy who served me was a kind person and he was running around and asking other staffs to make up the change for me.

Yes! Finally I got the bus ticket! Finally. I was kind of exhausted but I kind of enjoyed what had just happened. Experiencing something unusual is a lot of fun for me. This is why I am addicted to travelling abroad.

幸いにも会計をしてくれたおじさんが親切な方でオフィスの中を聞いて周ってお釣りをちゃんと集めてきてくれました。

はい、これでやっとバスチケットゲットです。ついにです。一連のやりとりで疲れたのですが、でもすごく楽しかったです！こんな日本じゃありえないことを体験するのが好きで旅行に行きたくなるんです、私。

So this sort of things can be annoying to some people but I'd say it was a pleasant moment to me, which I would remember it as a good memory of Abu Dhabi for time to come. 

なので、こういうことストレスに感じる人もいるでしょうが、私にとってはとても楽しいできごとでいい思い出になりました。

右が30分以上かかってようやく手に入れたHarifatカードチャージして使うSuica的な存在。他2枚はレシート。苦労して手に入れたカード、記念に取っておこうと思います。
