The push for made-in-America chips

The USs plan to outrun China has one big missing factor: people.

This is a site in Ohio where Intel is building one of the most advanced semi-conductor production facilities on the planet. The project costs 20 billion dollars and though the bulk of the money is entails, some of it will come from the government which is throwing 52 billion dollars in subsidies of the semiconductor industry.

It’s part of the flood of money the government is directing towards industry investment in a plan to outrun China and retain economic superiority in the 21st century. But it will take 7000 construction workers to build the plant and three thousand operators. Not only can Intel not find enough workers to operate the plant, it can’t even find enough construction workers to build it.

Intel isn’t alone. America is struggling to find assembly line workers, nurses, truck drivers, bus drivers, teachers and all sorts of other professions.

The US’s working population has been growing in the last five years at its slowest rate since 1960 and in 2018 and 2019, it shrunk and that is a result of a number of things, obviously the pandemic had a big impact. The other thing is that net immigration into the United States has been slowing ever since Donald Trump came into office in January 2017.

And it’s not just migration. It’s also Boomers retiring and fewer younger people entering the workforce. And the thing is this demographic problem is just beginning. It’s gonna be a big part of the US economy for many years to come.

The US government and the Biden Administration are incredibly conscious of the fact that there are labor shortages all across the US economy and all sorts of industries, one of the biggest areas of competition. In the years and decades to come, it’s gonna be simply over people. It’s about talented people and skilled people, but it’s also just about a mass of people. All these economies rely on workers. If you don’t have the workers, it’s incredibly hard to compete.
