Vintage first-class travel catered to those
who could really afford it. From this pristine propeller to classic fine
dining, the Peninsula Hong Kong’s China Clipper lounge gives us a glimpse into
the heyday of luxury travel.
Fast-forward to today, a number of airlines
are announcing revamps to first-class seats post-Covid, with the first to announce
being Lufthansa and Qantas. The whole look and feel of first class shows it’s
not just a seat anymore. The airlines want you to feel like you’re in a mini
hotel room. Qantas has enclosed suites with high walls that offer complete privacy
at the front of the plane. It’s big enough to sit with a companion traveler to
have your own first-class dining experience in the sky.
Lufthansa has also added first-class suites
with a particular cabin designed just for couples. It might not come close to
Etihad’s The Residence on the A380, but with double-deckers falling out of favor,
it’s a new type of suite for smaller new generation aircraft. So airlines are
extending the longevity of first class with expensive makeovers. Lufthansa’s
total makeover from the front to the back of the plane will cost 2.7 billion
dollars. Will it be worth it? It depends on who you ask. First class will feel
even more exclusive with all the upgraded touchpoints being added in the years
to come.
