○○次第

It's up to ○○??? It depends on ○○???


「○○次第だよ」という時に使う２つのフレーズ

It's up to ～

It depends on ～

日本語はどちらも「あなた次第」と訳されるのですが、置き換えられるわけではなく状況によって使い分けが必要です。


(1) up to (人物）.

これから決めることについての決定権がその人物にあるという意味で用いられます

up to の後ろに来るのは人物です


Where we go this weekend is up to my mother.

今週末の私たちの行き先は母次第で決まります。


～かどうかは（人物）次第だと言いたいときは"whether"や"if"を使って表現します

It is up to my teacher whether we are getting an assignment or not.

課題が出るかどうかは先生次第です。


How much money you bet is totally up to you.

どのくらいのお金を賭けるかは、君にゆだねられているよ。


例1:

A: What’s for lunch today?

B: It's totally up to you. I'm easy.

例2:

C: What time can I come over to your place tomorrow?

D: Well, I'll be home all day so it's up to you and your husband.

C: All right then I'll give you a call and let you know in the morning.

D: Sounds great. Catch you later.


(2) depends on (事柄、条件）.

今後の成り行きや結果が、条件によって変わってくるという意味で用いられます

文法上depends onの後ろに人物が来ることもできますが、あまり使いません

通常は結果を左右することになる条件がきます

条件となる部分には、"whether"や"if"の節、疑問詞を用いた節がよく使われます


The result depends on whether you study hard or not.

結果はあなたが一生懸命勉強するかどうかにかかっています。


It depends on where you buy it.

どこで買うのかによって変わってきます。


例1:

A: What’s for lunch today?

B: I guess it depends on what we've got in the fridge.

例2:

C: Are you guys going to have BBQ tomorrow?

D: Well, it depends on the weather. 

    I just checked the weather forecast and it said it would rain all day.


実践！！○○次第だよ！

まだ来週のスケジュールは未定なんです。上司のスケジュール次第なので。

まだ来週のスケジュールは未定なんです。上司次第なので。

時間と場所はあなた次第でいいですよ。（あなたが決めてください）

時間と場所は状況次第でしょう。（状況によって決まるでしょう）

The project costs 20 billion dollars and though the bulk of the money is entails, some of it will come from the government which is throwing 52 billion dollars in subsidies of the semiconductor industry.   It’s part of the flood of money the government is directing towards industry investment in a plan to outrun China and retain economic superiority in the 21 st century. But it will take 7000 construction workers to build the plant and three thousand operators. Solution one: What about charging more for cars that emit more pollutants ? It seems sensible considering global focus on climate change. In the UK, for example, driving a fossil fuel power dirty car in cities like London or Dublin means you'll be paying through the nose .
