(1) what
～もの、～こと

例
I know what you are trying to say.
私はあなたが言おうとしていることわかるよ

Jack heard what we were talking about.
ジャックは私たちが話していたことを聞いた

関係代名詞のwhichやthatは名詞の直後に置くというルールがありましたが
whatの場合は特定の名詞がなく、単純に「～のこと」というときに
用いられます
whatを使って表現されることやものは、名詞を補うとwhichやthatでも言うことができます

what I ate this morning 今朝私が食べたもの
(＝the food that I ate this morning 今朝私が食べた食べ物）
what the article says その記事が伝えていること
(＝the fact which the article says その記事が伝えている事実）

Dialogue
A: I don't get what you are saying.
B: Come on. Of course you do. You are my brother.
    Tell me what you don't understand.
A: I mean I have no idea what you are talking about.
B: Ok then. This is what we're gonna do.
A: What?
B: I'm gonna write down what I have in my mind, then you can go over them.
A: All right. Whatever you like. Meanwhile I'm gonna grab a drink at the cafe. 
    Do you want one?
B: Yeah, Get me what you think is the best there, will ya?

①I know what (        )(            )(   )(        ).
　私は私がやるべきことがわかっています

②(          )(          )(           ) to do right now is to get a job.
　彼がすぐにやる必要があることは、仕事を見つけることです

③私は彼女が好きなものをしりません

④誕生日に欲しいものを私に教えてよ

(2) where
～の(場所)

修飾したい名詞が場所であるときはwhereを直後につけます

例
I went to the restaurant where my friend works.
私は友達が働いているレストランに行った

He doesn’t know the park where the event will be held next week.
彼は来週イベントが開かれる公園をしりません

ただし、名詞が場所でもwhereではなく、thatやwhichを使うべきときがあります

例
I know the castle that Toyotomi Hideyoshi built.（城は単純な目的語として使われている：城を建てた）
私は豊臣秀吉が建てたお城を知っています
I know the castle where Sengoku warriors stayed.（城で行われたことについて話している＝副詞）
私は戦国武将が居た城を知っています

That is the house that she bought two years ago.
あれが彼女が2年前に買った家です（家は単純な目的語として使われている：家を買った）
That is the house where she was brought up.
あれが彼女が育った家です（家で行われたことについて話している＝副詞）

※thatは省略できるが、whereは省略できない

Dialogue
A: Hey, do you know that shop where they sell the latest diffuser?
B: Well, I'd say you should go to some places in Akihabara where they sell literally every kind of electric appliance.
A: Yeah but it is kind of a pain to go all the way to Akihabara. 
    Do you remember the place that we walked pass on the other day?
B: Which one are you talking about? 
A: You know the one where they had the massive TV at the entrance.
B: Is that the shop where I bought my laptop last month?
A: No. I'm talking about the other one near McDonald's.
B: Oh, yeah. 
    The shop that you are talking about closed down for good last week!

①I want to go to the restaurant (        ) you can eat (         )(       ).
　私は新鮮な魚介類が食べられるレストランに行きたい

② India is the country (        )(       )(          )(       ) visit.
   インドは私が訪れたい国です

③あなたは彼が先週行った病院を知っていますか？

④私はJessicaが以前住んでいた町を知りません


(3) when
～の(時)

修飾したい名詞が時を表す単語なら、whenを付けて修飾します
例えば、the day, year, week, month, era, minute, time, Sunday, spring, vacationなどです

例
I went to a collage in Tokyo. That was the time when I lived by myself.
私は東京の大学に行きました。それが私が一人暮らしをしたときです。

Do you remember the weekend when we went camping together?
一緒にキャンプに行った週末のことを覚えてる？

Dialogue
A: Do you remember the day when Lily was born?
B: Of course I do. How can I forget that?
A: That was the summer when the temperature hit a record.
B: Wow you have such a good memory.
A: And the year when we moved into this house was the year of Rio Olympics.
B: Oh yeah, that's right. I remember the time when Japanese relay team won the silver medal.

　私はあなたが大学生だった時を知らない

②  (        )(       )(          ) Tokyo Olympics took place last time (        )1964.
 　前回東京オリンピックが開催された年は1964年です

③あなたは彼が転んだ瞬間を見ましたか？

④彼は武士がいた時代について学びたい


(4) why
～の理由、なぜ～

関係副詞のwhyは、the reasonにのみ使います

例
That is the reason why he doesn't like sports.
それが、彼がスポーツが好きではない理由です

Can you tell me the reason why we should take off our shoes？
どうして靴を脱ぐべきなのか教えてくれますか

Dialogue
A: There is a reason why Dan speaks good Spanish.
B: I guess he studied at collage or something?
A: That's not the reason why his Spanish is so natural.
B: Then he was born in Spain, Brazil or somewhere they speak Spanish 
    and brought up there?
A: Good guess.
    He was born in Japan and has never lived abroad.
    But his mother is a Spanish and she seems not to speak any Japanese.
B: Oh, so he always spoke Spanish to his Mom growing up. 
    No wonder his Spanish is good.

　彼らがここに来たのには理由があります

② Some people don't know (      )(         )(          ) Tokyo Olympics 
    was postponed.
 　東京オリンピックがなぜ延期されたのかを知らない人たちがいます

④私はイタリアが人気の旅行先である理由を知っています。


(5) how
どのように、～のやり方、方法

howは少し特殊で、他の関係代名詞や関係副詞のように、名詞＋howという使い方はせず、"how"単体か代わりに"the way"が使われます

例
He taught me the way he made the paper plane.
彼は私にどうやってその紙飛行機を作ったのか教えてくれました

The way I see it and the way he sees it are different.
私の考え方と彼の考え方は違います

Dialogue
A: Hey Nate. Could you tell me how I log into the system?
B: Well, I'm not sure this is the right way but I can show you how I usually do it.
A: OK.
B: You just have to go to this page and type in your ID number.
A: Is that they way you do it? Coz that is exactly how I have been doing.
B: Are you sure you did how I did?
A: Yeah I'm positive.

But it will take 7000 construction workers to build the plant and three thousand operators. The vast expenses of parking lot areas in places like Walmart or within the housing projects illustrates its importance. But there is a new issue in parking landscape with two possible solutions. The dilemma: how can city officials implement varying parking charges for different cars to increase revenue while maintaining fairness for car owners? Solution one: What about charging more for cars that emit more pollutants ? It seems sensible considering global focus on climate change. Solution two: What about if we charge larger, heavier vehicles more because they consume more parking space? Both these ideas are being tested worldwide. In the UK, for example, driving a fossil fuel power dirty car in cities like London or Dublin means you'll be paying through the nose . Your parking fee would be double compared to eco-friendly vehicles.
