Practical English Episode A-6 主語に迷った時はYouとTheyを使ってみる

"You should wear a mask in public spaces."



この文章、どのように解釈しますか？

直訳すると「あなたは公共の場でマスクをするべきだ」

ですが、一般論について話すときやみんなが周知していること、常識などを話すとき

英語では主語が"you"になることがよくあります


つまりこの "You should wear a mask in public spaces."は、

「公共の場ではマスクを着用しましょう」

というように、単にあなた一人に向けられた言葉ではなく

世間一般的な話をしているのに過ぎないのです！


Dialogue

A: Hey, I heard that you don't wear shoes in houses in Japan. Is that true?

B: Yeah, you are supposed to take off your shoes once you get in the house.

    But I guess you wear shoes inside your house all the time in Australia.

A: Actually that is not quite true. Many people including me don't like wearing          shoes at home.

B: Really? So do you mean you take off your shoes at home?

A: Yeah. I always walk bare feet at home and so do my father and brother.

B: That's interesting!


You should take off your hats whenever entering the room.

Are you supposed to register your ID in advance?

You are expected to submit the form three days prior to your medical check.

You are advised to cover your shoulders and upper arms in the temple.

Do you have to leave your strollers here?


主語が省略されているような日本語を英語にしようとすると、主語を決めるのに迷ってしまい言葉に詰まってしまった経験はありませんか？

そんなときは"You"の出番！


実践

夜更かしすると朝起きられない

飲みすぎはよくないです

野菜や果物を積極的に摂りましょう

ここでは靴を脱がいないといけないんですか？

事前にチケット購入するんですか？

虫歯にはなりたくないですよね

渋滞にはまるのは嫌ですよね

飛行機ではシートベルトをすることになっている

離陸の時はスマホの電源を落とさないとね

電車では静かにしましょう


日本語と英語は両極端な言語なので、正確に一字一句を訳すことができません

特に主語に関して言うと、英語は必ず主語を付けた話し方をしますが

日本語では主語が省かれていることが圧倒的に多いです

だから日本語で考えて英文を作ろうとすると

主語に迷ってしまうのです

そんなときの救世主がYouとTheyです

誰でもない、一般的な話をしたいときは主語をYouにすると言いたいことがスムーズに出てくるようになると思うのでぜひ試してください！



では、"They"はどんな場面で使われているのでしょうか？


Dialogue

A: What do they sell in Japanese convenience stores？

B: Literally everything.

A: Like what？

B: I mean they've got a variety of ready-made food, instant noodles, bread,            pastries, drinks, snacks, candies, toiletries, batteries, stationary, magazines,        socks, cosmetics...

A: Cool. Sounds like a department store. How can they sell so many stuffs in a        small place?

B: You know what? They might be better than department stores.


They only care about making profits.

Do they know what is going on in the Middle East?

They had massive "Black lives matter" movements throughout the US.


ここでも"they"が指すところはある特定の「彼ら」や「それら」というよりも

不特定多数の「そういう所では一般的に」という話をしています

上の会話文で言えば、あるコンビニで働いている店員さんたちのことを"they"と呼んでいるわけではなく、"in Japanese convenience stores"では一般的にという話をしています

また受動態で表現されるようなことを、"they"を主語することで肯定文にしてよりシンプルで伝わりやすい言い方にすることができます

名前が呼ばれたら中に入ってください

Please enter once your name is called.

Please enter once they call your name.

どちらも正しい文章ですが、肯定文の方がストレートで伝わりやすくなります

あの学校は制服があります

Ocean公園にはたくさんの遊具がある

日本の電車にはトイレがついていますか？

カナダでは毎日メープルシロップを食べるんですか？

Solution one: What about charging more for cars that emit more pollutants ? It seems sensible considering global focus on climate change.
