It is good to be different！人と違うって素晴らしい


The kids class has been working on alphabet crafts.
キッズクラスではアルファベットのクラフトに取り組んでいます。

I usually try to draw my students' attention through hands-on activities 
and I find crafts one of the best way for small kids to increase their understanding.
普段から、なるべく実体験を通した活動でみんなの興味を引き出すようにしています。
その中でも幼児～低学年の子供たちにとって
工作はとてもいい体験的学びだと思っています。

It is so interesting to see each one of them tries to describe one single letter 
in a various ways.　
I can see their originality and I want to value them.
一つのアルファベット工作でも表現の仕方に違いがあって面白い。
それぞれに個性があり、それを大事にしたいと思います。

Do you know a picture book called "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?" 
by Eric Curl? 
I was reading the book in the kids class on the other day. 
It was supposed to be a review on colors and animals.
エリックカールの"Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?"という絵本を
知っていますか？
邦題は「くまさんくまさん何見てるの？」です。
先日キッズクラスで、色の名前と動物の名前の復習を兼ねて
この本を読んでいたときのことです。

A few kids pointed out that the color of hair and skin of children 
on the book was weird. 
Indeed Eric's books are usually very colorful. 
And the entire class started laughing 
because the different skin color and hair color was funny.
何人かの子が本に出てくる子供たちの肌と紙の色がおかしいと言い出しました。
確かにエリックの絵本はどれもカラフルです。
やがてクラス全体が「変なの～！」といって笑いだしました。

Kids are very honest and straight. 
And this is the opportunity for me to teach them about 
the diversity of culture and race. 
So I explained in other countries everyone looks different 
and it is good to be different. 
Yes, it is good to be different and be individual. 
Most Japanese people would disagree on that though....
こどもってすごく正直。そして興味を引いた今こそが文化や人種の多様性について
知るきっかけ。
他の国に行くと、全員髪の色も肌の色も違うんだよ。
違うってことはいいことなんだよという話をしました。
そう、違うことや個であることはすごくいいこと。私はそう信じています。
多くの日本人はこの意見に異論を唱えるでしょうが、、、
though ～だけれども

I want my daughters to know there is another world out there. 
Both good and bad. 
And I want them to learn how to accept such differences.
It is good to be different！
自分の娘たちには外には違う世界があることを知っていてほしいと願っています。
いいことも悪いことも。
そしてそれを受け入れられる人になってほしいと思います。
人と違うことって素晴らしい！
